3 Sentences to Order Coffee in English

You walk into a cafe. The person at the counter asks what you'd like, and suddenly you forget every English word you know.

This happens to almost every English learner at some point.

The good news: ordering coffee only needs three simple sentences, used in the right order.

Sentence 1: Order your drink

"I'd like a [drink], please."

This is your main sentence. "I'd like" is a polite, natural way to order, more common in everyday speech than "I want."

Examples: "I'd like a coffee, please." / "I'd like a latte, please." / "I'd like a tea, please."

Sentence 2: Say the size

"Small, please." / "Medium, please." / "Large, please."

Most cafes will ask you this directly ("What size?"), so you don't even need a full sentence, just the size word plus "please."

Sentence 3: Say how you'll take it

"For here, please." / "To go, please."

This tells the barista whether you're staying to drink it, or taking it with you. It's usually one of the last questions they'll ask.

Barista: "Hi, what can I get you?"
You: "I'd like a latte, please."
Barista: "What size?"
You: "Medium, please."
Barista: "For here or to go?"
You: "To go, please."
