The Secret to Pronouncing B and V Differently

The "B" and "V" sounds can feel very similar.

But in English, they come from different places in your mouth, and mixing them up can change the meaning of a word.

❌ "I need a bacation." (sounds like "bacation")
✅ "I need a vacation." (correct "v" sound)

How to Make Each Sound

B sound (bat, boat, big)
Close your lips completely, then release them with a small burst of air. Your lips touch each other fully.

V sound (vat, vote, van)
Touch your top teeth lightly to your bottom lip, then push air through. Your lips don't close completely, your teeth do the work.

Warm-Up Exercises

  1. Press your lips together tightly, then release, 5 times, to feel the "B" sound.

  2. Touch your top teeth to your bottom lip and blow air gently, 5 times, to feel the "V" sound.

  3. Say "B... V... B... V..." slowly, noticing your lips close for "B" but not for "V."

Common Mix-Ups

❌ "I need a bacation." → ✅ "I need a vacation."
❌ "That's very berry good." → ✅ "That's very very good."
❌ "I have a big bideo." → ✅ "I have a big video."
