The 3-Sentence Trick for Meeting Updates

Do you ever give an update at work and it turns into a long story?

You explain every detail. People start to lose interest.

This happens because you want to explain everything, but a good update only needs three things.

What Doesn't Work

Long, unclear updates make people confused. They don't know if there is a problem or not.

"So yeah, we've been working on it and there were some issues but I think we're almost done, maybe by end of week? It depends."

What Works Instead

Use three short sentences.

Say where you are, what's next, and if there are any problems.

✅ "Quick update: we're 80% done. Next step is final review by Thursday. No blockers right now."

The 3-Part Formula

  1. Where you are — "We're 80% done." / "We finished the first part."

  2. What's next — "Next step is final review." / "Next, we test it."

  3. Any problems? — "No blockers right now." / "One small issue, but we're fixing it."

More Examples

When things are going well:

  • "Update: everything is on track. We finish Friday. No issues."

When there's a small problem:

  • "Quick update: we're almost done, but we need one more day. Small delay, nothing serious."

When you're just starting:

  • "We're just getting started. Plan is ready. I'll update you again next week."

Try This

Next time someone asks for an update, use the 3-part formula: where you are, what's next, any problems.

Keep each part to one short sentence.
